Start before the tour groups arrive. Fushimi Inari at 6:30am is a different shrine entirely, just you, thousands of vermilion torii gates, and the sound of birds settling into the cedar forest overhead. The full summit trail runs about ninety minutes up through the gates, past smaller sub-shrines tucked into the hillside where locals still leave offerings of sake and folded paper, worth every step of the climb while the light is still low and gold. Most visitors never make it past the first thousand gates near the entrance, so the crowds thin out fast once the path starts climbing, and by the halfway point at Yotsutsuji intersection the view back over Kyoto is worth the pause before pushing on to the summit or turning back down. The way down is faster than the way up, twenty minutes or so if the knees cooperate, and there's a small teahouse near the fourth station selling hot udon to hikers who skipped breakfast for an early start.

One JR stop south, Tofuku-ji is open by 9am, and its moss-and-gravel gardens are worth the entry fee alone, especially the Zen rock garden at Hojo Hall, raked into patterns that shift subtly with the season, almost nobody around this early to disturb the stillness. The temple's wooden Tsutenkyo bridge, usually swamped with autumn-foliage crowds from November onward, is empty enough at this hour to actually stand still on it and look down at the ravine below without getting jostled from either side. From there, head back into the city centre for breakfast at Inoda Coffee on Sanjo, a Kyoto institution since 1940 that still serves coffee the old-fashioned way, pre-sweetened unless requested otherwise, alongside a simple egg sandwich locals have been ordering for decades, in a room that looks like it hasn't changed a single fixture since it opened, because it never needed to.

The afternoon moves north to Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion, gold leaf over three storeys reflected in its own pond, the kind of building that looks staged for photographs and somehow still surprises in person. It's a single-loop site, twenty minutes is enough to see everything, but the reflection is worth circling back for if a cloud moves across the sun and changes the water's colour entirely. The grounds close relatively early compared to other major sites in the city, so this is one stop worth checking hours for in advance rather than assuming a late-afternoon visit will work.

Dinner is in Pontocho, the narrow lantern-lit alley running parallel to the Kamo River, small restaurants stacked three storeys high on either side, most with a river-facing terrace in warmer months worth asking for by name rather than accepting whatever table's offered first. The alley itself is barely wide enough for two people to pass comfortably, which is part of the charm, lanterns hung close overhead and menus posted outside in Japanese only at some of the smaller, better places. Options here range from casual yakitori counters to considerably more formal kaiseki rooms, so it's worth deciding on a budget and style before wandering in. A short walk from the alley's northern end, Sanjo Ohashi bridge offers one more quiet look at the river before heading back to the hotel for the night.

By early afternoon, head into Harajuku, starting at Takeshita Street for a loop through the crepe stalls and secondhand shops before ducking into the calm of Meiji Shrine, the forested approach cutting the noise out almost immediately. Lunch is a few minutes south at Yanmo, a curry-udon spot tucked down a side street off Omotesando, easy to miss and always worth the search. From there it's a slow wander through Omotesando's back alleys toward Shibuya, boutiques and coffee windows the whole way, before the streets start to funnel toward the crossing.

Shibuya Crossing hits different once the sun starts dropping, screens lighting up over the intersection as the scramble thickens into something closer to choreography. Ride the elevator at Shibuya Sky for the last light over the skyline, then descend back into the district for dinner at Uobei, conveyor-belt sushi with a digital order screen, fast and good and exactly the right pace after a long day on foot. Late evening belongs to Omoide Yokocho, smoke curling out of yakitori stalls barely wide enough for six stools, before the night pulls you further into the neon of Kabukicho…
